Our Story

Founded by Andrew Lacher, a passionate reader with a vision of bringing more to the town than just books, BookStacks opened its doors on a brilliant summer day in July 1997. Andy’s dream was simple yet profound: to create a space where people could come together, share stories, and rediscover the joy of reading. Prior to opening BookStacks, Andy had spent years working for a larger book retailer, where he found himself yearning for a more personal, fulfilling book selling experience.

Andy poured his heart and soul into the store, handpicking books, creating a welcoming atmosphere, and offering personalized recommendations to visitors. Over time, BookStacks became more than just a bookstore; it became a Bucksport community hub hosting author events, book readings, and countless conversations over coffee and wine.  Locals and visitors alike came to see BookStacks as a landmark in downtown Bucksport.

A New Chapter

In 2024, Kate Corwin, a Bucksport native and longtime BookStacks customer, approached Andy with an offer that would mark the next chapter in the store’s legacy. After a career in the corporate world, Kate felt called back to her community and to the store that has inspired her for years.

Kate had done most of her growing up in Bucksport, but as all small town 18 year-olds do, she went to college out of state, then moved to the largest city Maine has to offer. A friend's wedding in Fall 2015 would open the door back to Bucksport and no single decision in her life felt more certain and promising than that to move back home.

8 years after the move, 2 kids, and countless hours working for someone else, Kate finally had the courage to make the leap.  She approached Andy, expressing her interest in taking over BookStacks and continuing the legacy of an independent bookstore that had become so integral to Bucksport's culture.  Andy, recognizing Kate’s passion and understanding of the bookstore’s mission, agreed. Together, they worked out a transition plan, ensuring that the soul of BookStacks would remain intact while ushering in a new era.
